Dogtooth   SP-2010

Greek winner of the Un certain regard prize in Cannes about a strange family with three teenagers who have not seen any more of the world than their parental yard. Influences from without (sex, Rocky IV) cause the strict regime of the father to collapse.

When is a child ready to leave home? Not too quickly in any case, according to the parents of the three children in Dogtooth. The three are already teenagers, but have never left their parents' yard in their life - there's a high fence all around it. What they know about the world is made up of the lies and half-truths that their parents have told. In this way they have heard that cats are the most dangerous of animals and they are convinced that the aeroplanes in the sky are toys.
The father's strict regime eventually cannot be maintained, thanks to influences from without (sex, Rocky IV). According to Yorgos Lanthimos, the film shows a magnified version of the typical Greek family in which the children are kept dependent on their parents for a long time. He also wants to show how powerfully upbringing shapes someone's view of the world.
