With merciless precision, Östlund dissects how three kids are robbed of their mobile phones by street toughs. Does it matter that the perpetrators are immigrants? Or whether this is a reconstruction of actual events? 'Food for thought' is an understatement.
Three white boys aged about 12 are surrounded in a large shopping mall by five black kids, just a little older. Do they know the time? When one of them takes out his mobile phone, the game starts: that phone belongs to the younger brother of one of the attackers, he argues loudly. Let’s just go and ask him. And that is the start of an apparently endless journey, filmed in real time from the centre to the suburbs, driven by the constantly shifting group dynamics.
Director and scriptwriter Ruben Östlund (Involuntary) based his film on true events: a group of kids managed to rob about 40 other children between 2006 and 2008 in Östlund’s home town of Göteborg in the roundabout yet non-violent way shown in the film in long, distant takes. Östlund was allowed to study the legal documents surrounding the case and spoke to culprits and victims in order to build up his powerful analysis layer by layer.

Alarmerende film die ons hopelijk wakker schudt omdat we soms overduidelijk verkeerde prioriteiten te stellen. Dat illustreert Östlund door dodelijke ernst (beroving) af te wisselen met lachwekkende taferelen (trein). Hoe politiek correct moet ons debat nog zijn? De camera, en daarmee de toeschouwer, blijft steeds op gepaste afstand en dat maakt de frustratie bepaald niet minder groot. Ik moest onmiddellijk denken aan Hanekes "Code Inconnue", dat de toeschouwer soms ook toeschreeuwt in actie te komen. Dit soort tenenkrommende films kunnen er niet genoeg gemaakt worden!

Ik vroeg me inderdaad ook voortdurend af waarom die kinderen er niet van doorgingen van hun belagers die echt niet zoveel ouder dan ze waren (sommigen van dezelfde leeftijd en anderen misschien nog wel jonger) op de ogenblikken dat het wel kon..
Af en toe leek het of beide groepen (de kinderen en hun belagers) samensmolten tot een vriendenclubje, maar even later was dat dan weer helemaal verdwenen.
Mooie film. Verrassend einde inderdaad, maar ga dat dan zelf maar zien als het nog kan!

beklemmende film voor als je zelf kinderen hebt van een jaar of 12. Goede film voor eind lagere school of eerste klas middelbaar onderwijs met de vraag aan de kinderen "wat zou jij gedaan hebben?'
