Fiona is young and willing. She is a housemaid in the Bauer family, where all seems meticulously planned but no one seems to understand anyone. They also have no idea why Fiona is there and what she has in mind.
The Bauer family takes on a household help. This young woman, Fiona, is thrown into the middle of the family of five with only a few basic instructions. The inhabitants lead their own lives; they do not take much notice of each other and they don’t care how the outside world looks at them.
Fiona prepares for each new day without asking questions and without commenting. Uneasy meals, tragic loneliness and unsuitable behaviour do not seem to put her off balance. No one in the house notices that Fiona herself is wrestling with issues.
Totem is set in the Ruhr district, but time, place and context are not particularly relevant in this disturbing, soberly filmed drama. The behaviour, the choices and everyday routines of the protagonists are not revealed to Fiona nor to the viewers. Completely normal moments are juxtaposed with absurdist scenes; the tame rabbits in the garden are just as matter-of-fact as the cherished baby dolls in the nursery.

Best wel een vreemde film. Ik vond hem wel goed en ik heb absoluut geen spijt dat ik er naar toe ben gegaan. Ben ook niet weggelopen.

Tuurlijk meen ik dat. Echt alles was slecht aan deze productie. Snap ook totaal niet dat deze zooi geselecteerd is. Verder was er ook helemaal niets subiels aan.... En als we het dan echt niet meer weten, hangen we onszelf maar op. Briljant!

Deze film moet je liggen en ik zal hem veiligheidshalve niet aan iedereen aanraden (welke film overigens wel?) maar als je ook uit de voeten kunt met een wat subtielere film uit de categorie iets zwaardere kost, dan is dit een uitstekende film, IFFR meer dan waardig. Met een glansrol voor Natja Brunckhorst (Cristiane F).

Vreselijk slechte film. Lelijke digitale fotografie, talentloze kadrering, fantasieloze geluidsband, verhaalloos gebeuren over lelijke mensen die niet kunnen acteren. Bright Future? No Future!
