Loosely based on the Black Monk of Pontefract, a ghost who afflicted the county of Yorkshire in northern England in the 1960s and 1970s, When the Lights Went Out tells the story of the Maynard family. Father Len, mother Jenny and daughter Sally move into their dream house, but soon come across an uninvited ‘presence’. The twist comes when the invisible housemate makes friends with 12-year-old Sally.
The film reveals a meticulously designed 1970s art direction that also guarantees the necessary humour, for instance in the discussions between man and wife about the colour in the kitchen must be: is it avocado or just plain green? The film mixes the tight and effectively included ghost elements (forms suddenly popping up, flickering lamps, furniture moving on its own) with a northern sobriety that is exceptional for the genre. In this way, an unwilling priest is convinced in an unusual manner to cooperate by performing an exorcism.
Volslagen overbodige film die niet op dit festival thuishoort. Dit is zoals de meeste films over een exorcisme al heel vaak vele keren beter gedaan, zodat deze film totaal geen nieuwe insteek of verrassing biedt.
Eigenlijk hetzelfde als met Awaydays, de debuutfilm van dezelfde regisseur. Dat was een standaard hooligandrama met eenzelfde voorspelbaarheid.

Voor spetterende special effects hoef je niet naar deze film te gaan maar tjonge jonge wat valt er aan deze film veel te genieten. Een prima cast, zeer geloofwaardig acteerwerk, prachtig camerawerk, dito belichting en last but not least de prachtige jaren 70 aankleding maken deze film een lust voor het oog. Na Ginger Snaps opnieuw een horror juweeltje van Engelse bodem. Mag van mij in de top 10.

Zeer clichematige, amateuristische film zonder enig psychologisch belang. Heeft ongeloofwaardige dialogen, is niet bijzonder fraai gefilmd en wekt tot overmaat van ramp de suggestie dat veel van wat we zien echt gebeurd is. Maar zelfs als dat zo was, dan nog is dit geen goede film.

Deze film was precies wat ik ervan verwachtte! En echt spookverhaal geplaatst in een 70's setting. De schikeffecten zijn niet nieuw; als je een aantal films hebt gezien over spookhuizen (bijvoorbeeld Amityvil Horror) herken je aardig wat dingen. Maar eigenlijk maakt dat niet uit, de film blijft spannend en met regelmaat goed eng!
