Umfeld: Speedy J and Scott Pagano
The Rotterdam techno producer Jochem Paap (alias Speedy J.) and the American image mixer Scott Pagano presents an audiovisual dance evening in Off_Corso on Thursday 31 January.Jochem Paap was involved with the Rotterdam techno and dancing from the start and also had a hit Pullover. For the dance evening in Off_Corso he is working with Scott Pagano, to protect his visuals on several large screens. Pagano is more a film maker than a traditional VJ: he works with his own images, processed photographs and self-made animations. In addition, Paap is not an ordinary DJ, but a live composer using special software, samples and sound effects. The lounge of Off_Corso will provide a venue for the DVD Umfeld, an intense, beatless audiovisual creation by Paap and Pagano. One day earlier, the Dolby 5.1 Surround version of Umfeld will be shown in the Small Auditorium of the Schouwburg.5.1 offers the composer and extra dimensional: where stereo music can only move from left to right, 5.1 uses the whole three-dimensional space. Umfeld is one of the first compositions specially made for 5.1.
Thursday 31 Jan – 23.00 hrs – Off_Corso

The Rotterdam film festival sidebar ‘Short: Starting From Scratch (Jan 24 – 28, 2008) includes live experimental music performances by: Michaela Grill / Giuseppe Ielasi
Live Music and video performance of about 45 minutes. The multimedia duo Grill/Ielasi attempts to link improvised electronic music and abstract live visuals to the highest degree possible, making this neither a standard ‚concert‘ nor a ‚music video performance‘ - the object is to interact in a improvisational way with no hierachy between the visual artist on the one side and the musician on the other. From the visual point of view, the video material is generated live and the sound is one of the possible sources to influence the abstract visuals. The computer and the electronic interfaces function as active co-designers.
