Charmante documentaire, gedraaid op super8 en 16mm en met veel handgemaakte animaties, over cultfguur in de IJslandse muziekscene die vanaf haar 70ste in zeven jaar tijd in een creatieve explosie meer dan zeshonderd liedjes uitbracht in eigen beheer, boordevol uniek ambient geluid.
Charmante documentaire, voornamelijk gedraaid op nostalgisch super 8, over Sigrídur Níelsdóttir, de ‘grand old lady’ van de IJslandse muziek. Haar eerste album verscheen in 2001, toen ze al 71 was, en ze werd een cultfenomeen. Ze maakte haar hele leven al muziek, maar had die nooit opgenomen. Toen ze daar eindelijk mee begon, op een cassetterecorder in haar keuken, waarbij ze een keyboard bespeelde en allerlei huishoudelijke apparaten die rare geluiden maakten, wist ze van geen ophouden meer. Sindsdien heeft ze ruim 600 zelfgemaakte liedjes opgenomen en 59 (!) albums uitgebracht.
Níelsdóttir viel al snel op in de onafhankelijke muziekscene in IJsland. Artiesten als Björk en leden van Sigur Rós en Múm spraken in interviews lovend over haar muziek. In 2003 gebruikte Slowblow twee nummers van haar voor de soundtrack van de film Nói Albínói, die te zien was in de Tiger Awards Competitie in Rotterdam.
Het levensverhaal van deze Deens/IJslandse grootmoeder, al even rijk aan merkwaardigheden en toevalligheden als haar muziek, wordt onthuld met behulp van animaties, oude foto's en haar eigen woorden.
Regardless of the inherit risk that this film would work out as a big joke at the expense of grandma, the net effect is a wonderful and respectful portrait of an elderly lady who seemed to have had some impact on the music scene in Iceland. Everything home made with low-tech tools, and still producing 59 albums that were actually distributed and sold far far beyond the circles of family and friends.
The trailer of this film inspired me to book tickets, especially due to a few music fragments it contained, which sounded appealing to me for some inexplicable reason. Maybe I experienced her "secret" in these fragments?? The animation in this film was inspired by the collages, literally coming out of the hands of this same grandma, some of them used a CD covers, some of them just as wall decorations.
The Q&A after the sceening revealed that the film makers spent as much as 8 years together with grandma, hence developed a gut feeling for what to include and what not.
On top of it all: the film contains many humurous fragments and scenes. I only mention the "Catering: Yes, please" in the final credits. But there is so much more. What else could I do than giving the maximum score for the audience award when leaving the theater??
