Striptekenaar Gipi bewerkte voor zijn verfrissende filmdebuut een strip van collega Giacomo Monti. Die achtergrond is voelbaar in dit mooi vormgegeven, tragikomische sciencefictiondrama: over de affectieve problemen van een doorsnee ober, terwijl de wereld wacht op de komst van een buitenaardse beschaving.
Welke gaven hebben buitenaardse wezens die buiten het bereik van mensen liggen? Een levenloze omgeving opnieuw laten bloeien. Goed van kwaad onderscheiden. Maar vooral: geestelijke bevrijding brengen.
In dit Italiaanse sciencefictiondrama, dat in zijn donkere maar warme sfeer doet denken aan de moderne klassieker Donnie Darko, staat een ruimteschip op het punt op aarde te landen. De angst regeert. Alleen de introverte Luca, ober in een deprimerende bingohal, blijft rustig onder de naderende invasie. Hij leidt zelf het leven van een alien: teruggetrokken en solitair. Luca groeide op zonder moeder en heeft alleen contact met zijn vader, zijn macho collega's en twee prostituees. Zijn relatie met het vrouwelijk geslacht is moeizaam te noemen; maar is hij zich ervan bewust hoe dat komt?
Gianni Pacinotti, die furore maakte als striptekenaar, baseerde zich voor zijn speelfilmdebuut op een graphic novel van collega Giacomo Monti. Dat is terug te zien in de kleurrijke sets en de absurde, droogkomische dialogen. Deze psychologische karakterstudie houdt subtiel het midden tussen filmisch realisme en fantasie.
I very much liked the story line (including big and small twists that I didn't see coming), the absurd situations and the humor. Further, I think the actors are well cast. Especially, Gabriele Spinelli does a very good job displaying the 'complicated' main character Luca. The film easily kept my full attention, right from the absurd beginning to the end.
My vote could be no less than 5/5. (I hope that I will see more films from the director and/or involving these actors .)
p.s. If you want to see a film with expensive special effects involving "very realistic-looking aliens" (which may actually be hard to judge except for those who have seen aliens :-) ), or if you want to see man-against-alien combats, or a heroic main character, then you better watch a (quite) different film....

This film has no logical story line, no moral and no clear happy end. Yet it is entertaining for the whole duration, with absurd dialogues and even more absurd turns of events.
The tone is set during the opening credits, where we listen in on a radio reporter answering phone calls from people with the utmost idiotic opinions about the imminent invasion of aliens. The story continues with our main character (Luca) visiting a "professional lady" (that is what she calls herself) in an even more absurd setting of a furniture showroom. And I could go on endlessly with recalling subsequent events, rolling over each other with only a skeleton story to tie them together. But still, it is much more than a series of sketches, so read on.
The word "drama" in the announcement loosely relates to something that happened in Luca's youth between his father and his mother. It should serve to explain Luca's non-existing relationships with women, but psychology as a science is stretched to the limits here. It does not matter much, since all other things that happen in this film are not very scientific either.
We get to see some aliens, with sub-standard appearance, better call it "traditional". The aliens are smaller than us, but with relatively large heads and large eyes to compensate. Apart from seemingly having mysterious powers to cure people, any other technical or mental abilities remain uncertain. We don't see any high-tech devices, and we don't even know they have some.
All in all, undeniable untertainment for the full 95 minutes. Do not expect a consistent plot, for you won't get one. It is not memorable for years to come, but it has no such pretences.
