Aki KAURISMÄKI (1957, Orimatila, Finland), werkte als postbesteller, bordenwasser en filmcriticus voordat hij met zijn oudere broer Mika de productie- en distributiemaatschappij Villealfa Filmproductions Oy begon. Ondanks dat de Finse filmacademie Kaurismäki afwees, werd hij een succesvol en wereldberoemd filmmaker. In 2002 won hij op het festival van Cannes de prijs voor beste regie met The Man Without a Past. Zijn nieuwste film Le Havre (2011) is onderdeel van zijn derde trilogie, waarvan de laatste twee delen nog gemaakt moeten worden.
