The Hubert Bals Fund and the Jan Vrijman Fund join forces in organising a special film festival tour through Africa. The Cinema Mondial Tour brings fiction films and documentaries supported by the two funds to film festivals throughout Africa.
The Hubert Bals Fund and the Jan Vrijman Fund support remarkable and urgent fiction and documentary films by talented filmmakers from Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and Eastern Europe. With this special tour, the funds hope to contribute to the visibility of these films in Africa. The Hubert Bals Fund is part of the International Film Festival Rotterdam. The Jan Vrijman Fund is an initiative by the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam.
Successful Cinema Mondial Tour in Africa extended
The Cinema Mondial Tour in Africa, which started in July 2010, is to continue for a second season. The Cinema Mondial Tour continues in 2011-2012 with a new programme of feature films and documentaries from Africa, the Middle East and Latin America. In addition, new festivals in Africa have been added to the existing programme.
As in the first season, the films in the Cinema Mondial Tour programme come from African countries as well as other regions where the HBF and JVF are active. The first programme consisted of twelve films, screened at festivals in ten African countries. The first Cinema Mondial Tour in Africa was a great success, thanks in part to the varied programme of films from various regions. It has proved difficult and costly for film festivals to show films from Africa – the Tour made this possible.

In total, the first programme was seen by some 8,000 African film lovers (provisional estimate). The cooperation by the Hubert Bals Fund and the Jan Vrijman Fund with the African festivals also led to the support of all manner of other film and documentary projects such as seminars, workshops and open-air screenings. At the Zanzibar International Film Festival, the funds contributed to the special programme whereby the festival goes into the provinces and organises open-air screenings.
Cinema Mondial Tour 2011-2012
For the second tour the funds offer the participating film festivals the opportunity to request financial support for the dubbing of films from the Cinema Mondial Tour and the addition of these films to festival programmes in rural areas.
