Every year, completed films supported by the Hubert Bals Fund screen at the International Film Festival Rotterdam: an ideal launching platform for independent cinema from around the globe.

IFFR’s Hubert Bals Fund supports remarkable or urgent feature films by innovative and talented filmmakers from developing countries. Since its establishment in 1988, close to 900 projects from independent filmmakers in Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and parts of Eastern Europe have received support. Approximately 80% of these projects have been realized or are currently in production.

IFFR 2012 screened 17 HBF-supported films. In recent years internationally successful HBF supported films are Abrir puertas y ventanas by Milagros Mumenthaler, My Joy by Sergei Loznitsa, Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives by Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Independencia by Raya Martin, Los viajes del viento by Ciro Guerra and Tiger Award winners Agua fría de mar by Paz Fábrega and Mundane History by Anocha Suwichakornpong.

Many festivals keep a close eye on completed HBF supported films and select them for their programmes. Each year, HBF supported films are screened at, among others, the Cannes, Venice, Locarno, Toronto, Hong Kong, Buenos Aires and Pusan film festivals.

In 2012 the Cinema Mondial Tour, a selection of Hubert Bals Fund and Jan Vrijman Fund-supported films, continues to tour along African and Middle Eastern film festivals and screening platforms.
