African dawn

IFFR 2010's Where is Africa strand kicks off on Tuesday with  a century-spanning selection of shorts and live musical accompaniment.

The main attraction, Par la nuit, is a unique collaboration between film maker Cesar Paes, storyteller Jean-Luc Raharimanana and musicians Tao Ravao, each of whom inspired one another by their contributions to a work from and about Madagascar.

The programme also includes early silent shorts Chez les Watuzzis (1920), about a Rwandan king's celebrations, and Silivia the Zulu (1928), which blends anthropology with fantasy and witchcraft. They will be accompanied by performances by Percussion Discussion Afrika and Tao Ravao & Jean-Luc Raharimanana.

Rounding out the line-up are Diplomate a la tomate (1989), about an unusual Senegalese cottage industry, and Bon voyage Sim (1966), a Nigerian fable about a frog king.
